Designers Walk – Ben Johnston

Ben Johnston creates beautiful interiors that draw upon his clients’ own styles, while bringing the classic design principles of balance and simplicity to these spaces through clean lines and tailored details. Even though he enthusiastically works in many styles, Ben’s tastes lean toward the neoclassical, upon which he layers texture and inspirational elements from various cultures and periods. He prefers tone-on-tone palettes that build toward a harmonious balance, with unexpected moments to delight and surprise. Ben earned his Bachelors of Architecture from Texas A&M and his Masters of Architecture from University of Texas, graduating Magna Cum Laude from both universities. Upon returning to Houston, he worked as a designer and as professor of Interior Design at Houston Community College, building its reputation into one of the best-regarded design programs in the city. Ben enjoys sharing his knowledge with others, appearing as a design contributor on ABC’s syndicated program, “Deals,” and as an invited speaker. Since co-founding Avondale Design Studio with Kathryn Berardo, his work has appeared in several publications including Houston Chronicle and Houston House & Home magazine. Ben is named a “Rising Star of Design” by the Decorative Center, and a “Leader in Design” by the Houston Design Center.
